New temperature device launched for cold storage

25-Mar-2008 - A new data logging device provides regular updates on the temperature of a cold food product when it is in storage or transit, the manufacturer claims.

According to MadgeTech, the new TransiTempII temperature logger features a sensor that can detect temperature changes to half a degree celcius differences, and can be set at a reading rate of anything from every five seconds to every half an hour.

Processors are increasingly on the lookout for improved temperature measuring equipment for cold storage equipment, as regulators are increasingly strict over how cold or frozen foods should be safely stored.

The US-based manufacturer claims that its new logger is ideal for these requirements, as the Light-Emitting Diode (LED) alarm indicates within seconds whether a product is stored at a safe temperature or not.

A green light signals safe storage conditions, yellow indicates that the temperature is nearing the safety limits, and red signals that those limits have been passed, the company said.

Furthermore, if the TransiTempII is being used when transporting cold foods from one location to another, the device can be programmed to start after a delay of up to 30 days depending on when the shipment will leave, the company said.

The device also comes with a docking station, for easy data access, and is splash-proof, the company added.

Several food companies have sought improved temperature devices since global regulators published a draft of the Codex Alimentarius food safety code calling for stricter temperature regulations.

The new Codex draft calls on processors to verify that a temperature of -18°celcius (°c) is maintained along the frozen or food supply chain.

Other companies that have created temperature-regulating devices include Arcolectric, which launched a panel-mounted logger last August. And in the same month, Deltatrek said its Digital Display Environmental Recorders can provide temperatures of between -20 and 150°.
